Living EdenAt Nanaimo Travellers Lodge we are on the way to becoming a certified Eden Care Facility. The Eden Philosophy of Care is a different way at look at the aging process and Elders at the Lodge get to experience this philosophy everyday.
What is the Eden Philosophy of Care?
The overall philosophy is built upon a single simple, yet radical theory: an Elder is a person who is still growing, still a learner, still filled with potential, and whose life continues to have within it promise for and connection to the future. An Elder is still in pursuit of happiness, joy and pleasure, and their birthright to these remains intact. Moreover, an Elder is a person who deserves respect and honour and whose work it is to synthesize wisdom from long-life experience and formulate this into a legacy for future generations.
Elders deserve a rich, vibrant environment that is filled with social and biological diversity, opportunities to build relationships with other living things, and a life worth living.
The philosophy was founded in the mid 1990's by Dr. William Thomas, a Harvard-educated physician and board-certified geriatrician. The Eden Alternative Philosophy of Care is now in over 300 registered homes in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia.
Eden challenges and teaches us to look at our surroundings differently; to see long-term care facilities where many Elders live as habitats for human beings rather than facilities for the frail and elderly.
An integral part of Eden Care, which is evident everyday at the Lodge, is how companion animals create the opportunity for the Elders to provide meaningful care to others. Our resident pets - bunny Mini Pearl, cats Shadow and Buttons, our four birds, etc are all part of creating meaningful care.
Spontaneous activities, from dance parties to visitors to music create variety and spontaneity which enlivened the environment and change an Elder's perspective and mood - often more so than medications and therapy.
Habitats that the Lodge staff create everyday nurtures and grows the human spirit and body as it develops and changes through the aging process.
